Early 1980s
In junior school the class had collective recorder lessons, each of us equipped with a black and white Yamaha descant recorder. What I recall most is that I liked playing F#.
I started playing the violin at about the same time, so perhaps the key of G was already familiar. Whichever came first, the violin or the recorder, I was moving away from C and encountering my first sharp note.
On the descant recorder, to play F# meant placing the ring finger over the first of the two double tone holes. Without having to bring the precariously narrow little finger into play over the second double hole. And raising both index and little fingers made it easier to place the middle and ring fingers. So all together this made for a comfortable, well-balanced finger pattern.
Covering that double hole felt curiously satisfying too. I can feel it still, the fit of my ring finger in its shallow wooden well. More bespoke and welcoming than those single tone holes above it in the middle joint. The fingers in concert, manipulating the air to sound F#.
